If you've seen the Video Propeller site, you know that it promises to dramatically increase traffic to your website. What you might not know is that the way it does it is 'shady'.

The site correctly explains how effective video traffic is. If you haven't used video marketing, the basic concept is that you create a video with your URL embedded and get thousands and thousands of people to watch it. The more people see it, the higher the chance that they will forward it on to their friends, creating a viral frenzy.

While that type of video marketing does indeed work, the way Video Propeller gets you there is not totally ethical.

Basically it is a system that artificially inflates the number of views you have on your video. It uses proxy servers and some randomization to generate 'views' of your video. It does it slowly enough that it doesn't trip any flags at the big sites like YouTube.

Once the views are high enough, the video gets 'Featured' as a popular video. Once a video makes it to the Featured page of any given category, the genuine traffic will skyrocket and you can discontinue the artificial inflation.

This is totally unfair. The playing field is no longer level. Someone with legitimate content is hoping for viewers to watch, hoping to some day make it to the Featured page. And they will keep getting bumped back by folks gaming the system like this.

So, while the Video Propeller product itself doesn't scam buyers (it actually delivers the product), I feel like it's helping the users scam other video marketers who try to play by the rules.

As mentioned in another post, Video Propeller is a video marketing product that helps people 'cheat'.

As evidence of this shady tactic, you can find proof directly from the website itself. If you read the references carefully, you'll find that one of them says,

Within 30 seconds we'd got things configured and had begun to generate hits. I was delighted to note that Video Propeller supports multithreading so it was lightning fast. We added 100 views to our youtube account in the time it took me to take a shower.

They are so bold that they even provide this information to someone who cares to actually read it.

While there may not be anything actually illegal with using it, I definitely feel like this pushes the boundaries of fairness past their breaking point. The users themselves are admitting that they are bumping views since the higher view numbers helps it generate real traffic.

Case closed: Video Propeller is helping folks cheat.

Does Video Propeller increase YouTube views?

Yes and No and Yes.

The way Video Propeller works is that it ARTIFICIALLY increases your views on YouTube by using a program to dial into YouTube and view your video(through a proxy server so it doesn't look like one person doing it).

So, even though you aren't actually getting 1000 visitors viewing your video, for example, the YouTube counter is incremented up to 1000 over a relatively short period of time.

Technically, then, YES you are increasing the view COUNT, but NO that doesn't increase the number of VIEWS by that much.

But what happens is that the video gets found more frequently (YouTube displays more frequently viewed videos at the top of their categories), and can even end up in a Featured section. THAT creates real views.

Bottom line: Video Propeller doesn't increase YouTube views, but it does increase the view COUNTER, which then in turn causes a true bump in real traffic.

On a personal note, I consider this 'gray hat' at best. Just because something works doesn't mean you should do it. I believe it's unfair, but the results are such that it doesn't bother some people.
